 Description:  The United States designated HAMAS, a Palestinian section of the Muslim Brotherhood which came into existence during the first Intifada in 1987, as a FTO on October 8, 1997. HAMAS has a paramilitary branch known as the Izz al-Din al-Qassam Brigades, which has launched rockets into Israel from Gaza.

Targets: Key targets of HAMAS include Israeli civilian, military, and civic personnel.

Activities: HAMAS has executed numerous attacks against its targets, including cross border rocket attacks and abductions. Israeli invaded Gaza numerous times to quell the threat of HAMAS, leading to casualties on both sides, as well as civilians caught in the crossfire.

Diplomacy: HAMAS refuses to recognize Israel’s right to exist. HAMAS also views the secular Fatah group based in the West Bank as a political rival in the Palestinian territories legislature. HAMAS also uses tunnel networks to smuggle men and materiel from Egypt into Gaza.

Strength:  Estimated to be around several thousand personnel in Gaza

Funding and External Aid:  HAMAS has received arms from Iran and from Bedouin smugglers from Egypt. HAMAS has also received funding from Palestinian ex-patriots and Muslim charity organizations.
