Algerian soldiers killed Abdelmalek Gouri, the mastermind behind the Herve Gourdel beheading, in an ambush around Isser, Algeria on December 23, 2014. Gouri was the leader of Jund al-Khilafa, a former AQIM affiliate and current ISIS affiliate in Algeria. Algerian intelligence discovered Gouri would be visiting his parents in the Isser area, and the army conducted a hasty attack, killing Gouri and two others while recovering small arms, explosive belts, and cell phones.
